I have had the privilege of working with some very successful people. People who own successful companies, people who lo longer fly commercial, people who, by traditional American standard, are rich.
Sadly, this in no way means that they are well versed in the hiring process, some are even a detriment to good hiring practices. I used ponder this, look to the heavens and ask why? I no longer do. People clearly have trouble "staying in their lane."
Confucius once said, “True wisdom is knowing what you don't know.”.
And herein lies the rub. Many of my clients and even some of the candidates that I represent are not self aware enough to know what they don't know. I have for many years advised people trying to find their star: CEO, CFO, partner, etc. or their dream job. Many, based on their success in their chosen field, believe that they are above needing advice on how to handle either side of the hiring process.
My advice, LISTEN. Listen to those around you. Listen to your significant other. Listen to the executive search professional you're working with. Listen to your most trusted friend. Listen to people who have advice to share and experience you may lack.
listen well, and close the deal!
