It's a new world out there in so many ways. One of the least significant, yet still relevant is work attire.
So many companies have moved away from a corporate look, this is likely led by the massive success of the companies in Silicon Valley. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, is well known for wearing hoodies and jeans, almost exclusively. Many companies are comfortable with their employees in jeans and a collared shirt, some are even more open-minded.
This trend, at this point not even a new one, can and does cause havoc in the interview process. It is extremely important for individuals that are visiting companies with the hope of getting the exciting new job they have always dreamed of, or at least dreamed of since they heard about the role a day ago, to Dress the Part.
There is not a person on this planet whose most impressive and most capable look involves jeans, it's just not possible. Put on a business suit. More than likely you will hear things like, "you didn't have to dress up for us!" Wrong! You do need to dress up, it says that you're serious, that you take the opportunity seriously and that the process is important to you. As I have personally said, and advised others to say, "when you offer me the job, I'll dress however you want me to, until then I'm going to dress to impress"
Under dressed could cost you a job, over-dressed never will.
